Hi all,
I am getting back to tracking and was wondering, if anyone knows about any tracker that would run as a portable app? The thing is that I have planny of time at work to make music, but I don't have admin rights to install soft to the computer, so portable app would solve this. If nobody knows I will try to make one of the classic trackers into portable versions (will be my first attempt to do portable stuff).

Well, MilkyTracker has a Windows CE version - so that version is not portable in the sense that it can be run from CD/USB drive, but it's y'know, bring with you on the subway portable....  It's also available on Windows, Linux, Mac OSX, and FreeBSD, so it's platform portable.  This also means that if you can use a LiveCD version of Linux that supports saving to a USB drive, you COULD make it portable for sure...  But you'd likely lose your ability to do work.

Unfortunately, I haven't tried any tracker run from USB sticks...  I don't toy with the windows registry enough to see if any of the trackers I have use it....  Chances are, a tracker that can be used in Linux would have a better chance, as settings are usually saved in a .conf file (even when ported to Windows) in the application directory, as opposed to a central registry location.  Of course Vista compatibility will change that, no doubt....

Milkytracker is totally portable.

Unzip and place the milkytracker.exe file on a USB stick.
It does not write nothign on the windows registry or similar.

only a milkytracker.cfg is created in the milkytracker.exe folder if you save extra settings for your display settings etc..

thanks for the info - I have updated my above post to make it seem less like it won't.  Good to know that it runs from USB Smiley

Thank you guys for your hlp. Will try the Milkytracker at work. Seems like it is a clone of Fast Tracker 2. I hope there is an option to switch from hexa style of writing effects to "standard" 64 (like in Impulse Tracker. I hated that on FT2 Smiley
