I'm looking for some good, general settings for cleaning up distorted guitar for a final mix.  I've got rough settings for a low shelf at 120 Hz and a high shelf at 8 or 9 kHz right now.  It sounds better than the raw, pre-EQ version, but I've lost some of the crunch.

Anybody got some recommendations on settings--or EQ plugins: VST, DirectX, whatever?  For recommended plugins, I'd like stereo if they're available, but I can route left and right channels separately if necessary.  I'd just like something with a little more fine-tuning than what I've got.  At the moment I'm using Sonitus:FX Equalizer, a DirectX parametric.

Later, Trackers.

Here are two links where there are eq tutorials. They might give some insight on the settings you need.

Check out the forums @ http://www.kvraudio.com/. There might be more useful info there.

Thanks for the links.  Checking them out as we speak...well, figuratively.  There's about 100MB of pdfs to be had at computermusic.co.uk, so I'll be a while slogging through them.

Know of any good graphic equalizer plugins?

I found a 31-band VST at http://www.karmafx.dk (along with a nice collection of other toys), courtesy of KVR's database.  Thanks again.
