A new article has been written for the site, on how to learn the basics of Tracking, and it's Chock full of Twinkly goodness!  You can find it under the "Traditional Tracking" section.  Want to see your article on here?  Submit your articles to the site!  PM me, or comment on this thread and we'll sort out the details!

As a side note, the "Why Track?" editorial that was in the "Traditional Tracking" section, is now in the new editorials section as it should be.

I would love to read it, but I find no section titled "Traditional Tracking".... and no linkage to the article.

True enough now.  This posting has been converted, but the article it refers to has not yet been converted from the old site.  You can find it Here on the old site...

It's a good article. A bit short for my taste. The person has the ability to succinctly point out marvelous things about the basics of tracking and that's much appreciated. Although alot more could be said on the topic. Such as my personal favorite inquery: MIDI. How can a person have step-timed volume, panning, and effect control over let's say for instance my Korg X5, or any other standard MIDI instrument? Also, could someone use something like an MPC2000 to take samples with and then somehow dump the sample programs into the tracker? And also, once my song has been finished, how can I put the song into a digital audio program so that I can add in my vocal and other live instrument tracks?

Thanks for the kind words!

I'm sure more could be said on the topic of tracking, but the purpose of the article was to cover the basics that almost all trackers support.  more advanced topics, and tracker-specific features were not in the scope of the aricle.  It's designed as more of a guide to get people started on tracking, and remove some of the fear associated with writing music (a seemingly fluid thing) in a grid (a very rigid thing)

While most Trackers do support MIDI, most trackers also have different ways of implementing MIDI.  Controlling an external synth via MIDI, or exporting from a Tracked format to a WAV/MP3/OGG were outside the scope of the article.  It also doesn't help that I don't have any MIDI devices at home for me to tinker with Smiley

Futhermore, these topics - While worthy - often depend on different features that trackers support.  For example, in IT, you need to purchase the WAV renderer driver for a quality mix.  Psycle has an Export to WAV function, but earlier versions required you to record it realtime.  It just isn't feasible for me to cover everything in one tutorial. On the other hand, If you wish to write a guide for the site covering any of these topics, you are more than welcome to do so...  With a cross-country move and a new job I have become rather limited in the time department.  Although after the ripper was exposed, my mind has been churning with a good ol' fashioned copyright article...

It reminds me why I hate the fact that I've now spent over $500 on professional music software (Sonar 5 undecided and GigaStudio 3 angry) that can't do what IT or FT2 can do: sequence single-note samples.  Oh, there are probably quite a few plug-ins that I could buy...SNARLL!!  I hate the fact that everything has to be a loop or MIDI controlled synth.  Sonar is great for mixing finished tracks or recording live vocals and instruments.  My complaint is having to finish the tracks in one program so I can mix and master a song in another program.  And it's really difficult to do the kind of "over produced" post-industrial sound that I'm looking for without taking that mastered recording back into the first program for some tweaks.  Is there a one-stop option out there?!

Is it possible that the tracker interface is too efficient?  Is it just too old?  Who cares!!  It works!

I love trackers.  I should just buy a copy of Renoise or MadTracker and save myself the headaches.

But I did like the article.
