Helllo as a lot of boat owners now have lap tops on there boats, and I will be one soon as well, I would like to know what kind - brand name - would be the most suiteble to have on board. As well, to know how well they are protected to the salt water enviroment. Application of LT is on a non-commercial way and for entertainment, however to keep in mind to later upgrade for sat-nav on a 27' live-a-board

Well, most laptops aren't designed for sea usage.  Having said that, you should look at how suceptible to water your cabin is.  For instance, if you have a sailboat, with your cabin below deck, and you only plan on using it when docked, then you have no worries.  However, if there is no cabin to speak of, only a cockpit to steer from, then you are looking into a very special market.  I remember there being a company that builds laptops to US Military specs (Waterproof, sandproof, etc), but for the life of me I can't remember their name.  their laptop cost somewhere in the $10,000 US range IIRC, so it won't be cheap.  Check boating magazines.  Write to one and ask the question as I'm sure there are many people in your situation.  Unfortunately, I don't own a boat, I just teach people about them once a week.  Best of luck in your search.
